What is Massage/Muscle Therapy?

Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments.  This bodywork helps achieve proper drainage, relaxation and/or stimulation, and also to relieve tension or spasm in the tissues.

What are the benefits of Massage/Muscle Therapy?

Today most of our equine partners have a certain activity that they participate in.  Ranging from trail riding, dressage, reining, eventing, jumping, fox hunting, endurance, western pleasure, and many more other equine sports and activities.  All these things make our horses athletes with their own set of physical demands placed onto them.  Massage/Muscle therapy is a great way to help prevent injuries and also make your horse feel their best.
Some more specific benefits of massage/muscle therapy are:

       *Improves Circulation

       *Reduces muscle spasm

*Prevents injury by helping detect problems early on

       *Releases endorphins

       *Relieves muscle soreness

       *Enhances proprioception

       *Improves athletic performance

*Helps restore full range of motion

*Aides in recovery of muscle injuries

*Helps drain toxins and increase oxygenation

How do I know if my horse needs Massage/Muscle therapy?

Picture
Horses let us know when something is wrong with physical communication.  Each horse is different so knowing your horse helps to determine when they are trying to tell you something.  Usually you will see signs as a change in behavior that is not normal for your horse.  The signs of muscles soreness or imbalance can include but are not limited to:

       *Decreased coordination or balance

       *Trouble bending in one direction

*Not picking up the correct canter lead

*Sudden girth discomfort or being "cold backed"

       *Poor disposition or attitude

       *Unwillingness to work

       *Head tossing

       *Bucking, rearing, or crow hopping

       *Trouble jumping straight

Generally, as the owner you know your horse best and will be able to tell when something is amiss with your equine partner.  Go with your instincts!

*****Please call your veterinarian first if your horse appears lame, neurologic, or in pain.  Massage/muscle therapy is NOT a substitute for proper veterinary care.******
